The "new" Wolf Man movie

Big news that I just read online from SciFi.com:

Universal Pictures is developing a new version of its classic horror movie The Wolf Man, with Benicio Del Toro playing the title role, Variety reported. Seven scribe Andrew Kevin Walker has begun writing the script. Scott Stuber, Rick Yorn, Mary Parent and Del Toro will produce. The studio owns the underlying rights to the character.

Like the 1941 original that starred Lon Chaney Jr., the new movie will be set in Victorian England. Del Toro will play a man who returns from America to his ancestral homeland, gets bitten by a werewolf and begins a hairy moonlight existence.

The deal came out of a series of meetings with the producers, Walker and Del Toro, who collects Wolf Man memorabilia.

Walker spent several months working on some frightening new twists to a familiar tale, adding several characters and plot points that take advantage of cutting-edge visual-effects technology.

Walker will turn in his first draft by the spring, and the producers and studio are optimistic that The Wolf Man will shoot early in 2007. The expectation is that The Wolf Man will be a summer 2008 tentpole.

Re: The "new" Wolf Man movie

I'm sort of looking forward to this one.  As long as they use CGI sparingly I think it has a lot of potential.  I love the original, but have room in my heart for more werewolf movies.

Re: The "new" Wolf Man movie

I hope they do a good job with it as well. This was the first werewolf film I saw as a kid, so I hold this film in very high regard. I think the fact that Del Toro is a huge fan as well, not to mention the fact that he's also a producer, means that there's a chance that this will be good. Of course, all of us will have to wait and see.

Re: The "new" Wolf Man movie

I'm impressed. Benicio del Toro has the look to pull it off.

Let's just hope that they don't add all sorts of fluff like "Van Helsing" contained. I'm not knockin' on VH (it was meant to be a campy tribute to the Universal monster days), but "The Wolf Man" was incredibly tragic and depressing and would be best kept that way.

I agree. I hope they take the classic route, and keep it the way it was. We'll see when it comes out.

Re: The "new" Wolf Man movie

I'm scared, and not in a good way. Whenever Universal Pictures uses the words "Frightening new TWISTS", I become very frightened for all the wrong reasons...

Oh I'm much more then that Brightboy... Much more.

Re: The "new" Wolf Man movie

It's about time we got a remake! Thay've rehashed ol' fangface and bolthead to death and completely passed the greatest of the Universal Monsters.
As long as the "twists" are a new look and a little more scenery, it will be all right. But when does Hollywood ever keep it that simple.
Het! Mabey someone should start a new thread, "What would you add/ remove to the old Wolfman story?"

Was it one of those dreams where your, like, standing on top of a temple in sungod robes with a thousand naked women screaming and throwing little pickles at you?
Why am I the only one who has that dream?
