I recently visited Scotland and the highlands are just screaming for a Werewolf movie.  The strange thing is, we would hear howling at night, but they have no more (at least none that know of) wild wolves left, at least not where we were and coyotes don't exist out there.  I think one of the estates near where we were staying must have had hunting dogs.

Just a greywolf out there would be considered huge.  The wolves that were being bred in capitivity to keep the species alive were small compared to what we see here, but the atmosphere at night can be really creepy.  There are still LOTS of places that can be considered "Wild Country", which is getting harder and harder to find in the US.

This came up on On Demand, so I gave it a watch.

While not a classic by any means, Wild Country is a watchable werewolf film that does something different from the usual story and even gives the werewolf a happy ending instead of letting the humans win. The bleak, dark moorland setting makes me think inevitably of An American Werewolf in London. The gore is well done, with none of that CG splatter crap. At 72 minutes we don't learn to much about the light snacks - er, human characters - but it means the movie also doesn't drag on and overstay its welcome.

People who like all their movie werewolves to be photocopies of Rob Bottin's design are going to be disappointed in the creature design, but I found it refreshingly odd. The shaggy, quadrupedal beasts don't look much like a wolf, but with their long snouts, flat heads, and tiny, side-set eyes they're actually dead ringers for the extinct carnivore Andrewsarchus. There's no transformation scene, beyond a quick shot of a character with contacts and fangs before they appear as full-animal. Admittedly, the beast looks better in quick glimpses and in the dark, once it's out in broad daylight it looks rather too much like an escappe from Labyrinth, but oh well . . .
