Re: New comic "Night" by Jester Press

This forum was started based on NinjaWolf's post in other forum:

NinjaWolf wrote:

Well with Bubba as my first, I have one other werewolf comic out there from my nearest comic book store. It's called "Night", published by Jester Press, and I have to tell you - the characters and the plot look GREAT for the first issue! Usually, the story goes as a werewolf and vampire storyline, but they're other creatures that will soon come out in future issues. So far, I only got that first issue and have heard that the next one will come out soon. Not only that, the writer and the artist who did the first one are in MY state and sometimes work at the same comic book place I've been into. That's so cool! Not much as been sold there, but I think with you're support, it'll be worth it to them! I think the website is: www.jesterpress.com. I think you can contact them there, plus look at the cool sketches! Go ahead and browse. wink

Guys, thanks for the interest in Night!
Troy and I have been wroking hard to create a solid product for fans of those who prowl the night.  Werewolves won't be the only eyecandy though, we'll have them squaring off against Vampires, Zombies, and any other creature of te night  you can think of.

We're pleased with the inital responses to Night # 1 and I just, today received a call from the printer that #2 is printed and ready to ship.  In Issue #3 I have more werewolves and am trying to make each a little more unique - I've always thought that the wolf would take on the characteristics of the person he/she inhabits.  I have tall werewolves short, fat skinny musclebound etc.  To try and bring dimension to our werewolf world.

As fans, any comments / suggestions you have would be helpful - just e-mail me.

Thanks to those of you who have picked up the first issue, and for those who would like to:  get your local retailer to orer it - or you can order with a form we have on our website - www.jesterpress.com

Re: New comic "Night" by Jester Press

Yo, BudPrince, I think Troy had talked to you a few days ago. I'm actually the creator of "The Ninja Shift" from the Ninja Burger site, aka Recca Hanabishi. I told Troy I liked the story and artwork a lot and can't wait for the second issue! Too bad I had to skip out for Xmas errands before you came in, otherwise I would've stayed longer and talked longer with you and show you my artwork online. Anyway, I'm here in Charlotte, so if you go by the usual comic book place again after Christams and the New Year has died down a bit, hopefully we'll meet and talk more. wink See you then!

Re: New comic "Night" by Jester Press

Thanks for the great thread !!  Hopefully some werewolf fans will catch it and get themselves a copy of NIGHT....there hasn't been that many Werewolf comics...1970's classic Marvel Werewolf By Night..... 1990's Image Art driven Wetworks ( if you consider that a werewolf book) and 2003 -2004 Scratch by DC.....so they are far and few between and we're just hoping to fill in some of the void.....

I really appreciate your feedback NinjaWolf and next time you come by the sto' make sure it's not Wends....that way I'll have more time to chat

Hi Troy!  Welcome to the site jesterpress!  I printed out one of your order forms, as I am going to mail a check out this week for some issues.  Can I order issue #2 right now too?  Or should I wait a week?  If it's easier to order through the comic book shop by my place, I can do that too.

NIGHT #1

Written by Troy Hasbrouck - troy@jesterpress.com
Art by Buddy Prince

The introductory remarks are ones I have read before. They are
about a "life-long labor of love" and every comic reader's dream
to write or draw their own comic. Words of this type are not
unusual in the first effort from an independent self-publisher.
What is unusual is the few that really have the right formula,
the honed talent to catch you right away so that you know it will
be something special. Works like 2 OVER 10, BONE, FINDER, and
others hit me that way. What is more usual, despite all the heart
felt sentiment, is a very amateur effort with many flaws and
little chance of getting past a few issue when the money and
enthusiasm runs out. NIGHT #1 falls somewhere in between.

First it is a crime horror drama with werewolves, vampires,
zombies and the like. The local Chicago cop finds an FBI team
waiting at the scene of a horrific massacre - body parts all
over. The next night some punks are having fun rolling a
rich couple who got lost the wrong side of town. Then they
notice a lone man across the street and they figure to continue
the crime wave but they are in for a surprise. The crux of the
story follows this would be victim, David, as he gets involved
with a rival gang and things lead up to a confrontation not only
among the gangs but with the FBI.

The story is good enough to keep you interested though the end of
the first issue makes you wonder if it is over all ready. We
learn that David has inner conflict about his transformations and
someone in the group is not helping. There is good
characterization and plot development. Likewise the art is good
enough. But for me it looks just a bit off. The eyes of the
characters are too big, not the right proportion. This must be
what Buddy is stressing but I found it distracting. When the
werewolf attacks he does a neat reversal to a darker figure and
white text in black word balloons. It is a good effort that will
become better over time. This one, as I said, is one of those
that could become something if it appeals to the right crowd and
gets exposure. If anything, the art style will probably determine
who will or will not buy it.

Re: New comic "Night" by Jester Press

NIGHT #1
Published by Jester Press
Written by Troy Hasbrouck
Pencils, Inks & Lettering by Buddy Prince

NIGHT #1 is the initial effort by fledgling publisher Jester Press. It also marks the initial published efforts for Buddy Prince, who provides the pencils, inks and lettering, and Troy Hasbrouck, who provides the story and words.

As a first effort, for both publisher and creators, NIGHT #1 is, well, not bad.

The story is an interesting experiment in genre-blending, in that it involves inner-city gang warfare, a mixed-gender set of investigative FBI agents, murder, mayhem and, oh, yeah, a werewolf.

NIGHT opens with the gruesome discovery of at least thirty mutilated bodies in an old warehouse. The police investigation is usurped by two FBI agents, Voght and Whildon, who are searching for... something.

Meanwhile, a ruthless gang of street toughs, the Phreaks, attack a lost, elderly couple and walk off bragging about their vicious behavior, only to fall, in turn, under the attentions of something even more vicious. The man behind the wolf is taken in by a rival gang, which leads to a street riot and more death and danger.

I enjoyed the thrust of the story, itself. By injecting the tropes of horror fiction into the setting of urban investigative procedural, Hasbrouck is reaching for something new or, at the least, unusual.

However, Hasbrouck sometimes falls prey to the tripwires facing new writers. The captions feel a bit overheated and, often, characters act in certain ways because the script says so, rather than through any of their own characteristics. Also, the duo could have used a copyeditor at some point. The frequent use of your for you're was enough to drag me out of the story at several points.

The story ends on a strong cliffhanger, which left me wanting more. Hopefully, I won't have to wait too long to find out what happens next.

Unlike many artists, Prince knows his anatomy. People in NIGHT actually have ankles and aren't disproportionately grotesque. I did have a few quibbles though. For some reason, the size of people's eyes tend toward the manga-esque, taking up fully a quarter of their faces. Additionally, Prince's characters tend to stand with their legs spread wide enough to fit a horse under themselves.

While the design of the werewolf tends to be reminiscent of Marvel's Sabertooth, I thought Prince did a good job otherwise in depicting the action.

Despite its flaws, NIGHT #1 is a worthy initial effort from Jester Press. NIGHT #1 is well worth picking up, if only to enjoy the first efforts of two creators who are going places. I enjoyed reading this and look forward to future outings.

Night #1
Writer: Troy Hasbrouck
Penciler: Buddy Prince
Publisher: Jester Press

Classic horror meets gangland USA in this new indy comic that
holds a lot of promise.

The story starts off in New York City where gang wars rule the
night. But tonight the cops find a grisly murder scene. There
are body pieces all over, but no bullet or knife wounds. An FBI
agent named Sabrina Voght shows up. She's been traveling all
over the country following murder cases just like this one. The
murderer turns out to be a werewolf, but there's more to him than
meets the eye.

The werewolf, David Skinner, looks quite apathetic in his human
form. He looks like he just wants to be left alone, but he's
afflicted with this curse that, obviously, won't leave him alone
and just attracts trouble. He's got no loyalties to anyone and
doesn't even stick around to help out the gang that took him in.
This makes me a little sad because the other character that
interested me was Billy, this little boy that the gang was
raising.

Skinner and Billy are the strongest and most developed characters
in this first issue. Some of the gang members and the Police
Chief have personality, but limited page time prevented me from
getting a good sense of them. As for the FBI agent Sabrina
Voght, all I can say is that she looks to also be hiding a secret
and only time will tell if she's a good guy. But something tells
me that this world doesn't have clear-cut good guys and bad guys,
which goes a lot towards the realism of the story.

Along with the premise and characters being pretty solid, each
character looks distinctly different. No two characters look
alike and it's really easy to read the emotions on people's
faces. That being said, the rest of the artwork has a ways to
go. I'm no art expert, but I can tell when something doesn't
look right. Too often people look like they're posing.
Sometimes the proportions or perspectives don't quite seem right.
But it's not always bad. There are definitely some good shots,
even some perfect moments. The closer the shots, the better the
art. Like a lot of other comics just starting out, I'm sure the
art will improve. With some feedback and pointers, this comic
will get better.

The only other complaint I had was the flow of text bubbles. It
was sometimes hard to tell which bubble to read next. There was
even one moment where I didn't know which panel to look at next.
Again, these are issues that will be fixed as more work is done.
I'm looking forward to the next issue and seeing how the
encounter with the werewolf and the FBI agent plays out.

NIGHT #1, b&w comic by Troy Hasbrouck & Buddy Prince (Jester Press;$2.95)

Some things are just awful, and NIGHT's one of them. Cliché cops and cliché FBI agents hunt street gangs and werewolves, with bad dialogue, squat art and not an idea in sight, with all characters (including one of those laughable multicultural street gangs that only pop up in comic books and movies) seemingly cribbed from those bad action-horror flicks that only appear on The Movie Channel at 2AM. I'm sure these guys are sincere and all, but there's really nothing to justify this book on any level.

Re: New comic "Night" by Jester Press

What I love about Night #1, is that the story is pretty intense. There is plenty of drama and lots of action! The artwork is absolutely amazing. I thought I was staring at the real cityscape of Chicago! Buddy Prince is an amazing artist! In the movie “Suicide Club”, there were 54 girl students that held hands, mumbled some chants and jumped in front of a train. The sight was grisly and I found the same grisly sight in this comic book as there are 35 ripped up bodies and Special Agent Sabrina Voght is looking for some answers to these horrific killings! As the story progressed, then I was surprised when the comic book fanboy is accosted outside of a comic book store by a gang called the Phreaks. They got that name because when they get a hold of someone, there is not too much left of that person, except being a freak for the rest of their lives, if they can survive the encounter. But, what is cool is that they messed around with the wrong fanboy, this one becomes a werewolf and the Phreaks get it real good by this monstrous creature! At one time the fanboy was trying to keep his transformation under control, but if you are being bombarded by something evil, It’s time to break out the big guns! Krison and his Phreaks are armed to the teeth, but I don’t think that is going to help them against this wolf of the night!! Night #1 is the type of comic book that you want to read in the daytime. If you read it at night, you may just have some nightmares!

Sincerely yours,

NIGHT #2  Overview! by Paul Dale Roberts of Jazma! Online

Overviewed by: Paul Dale Roberts, Publisher www.jazmaonline.com
Comments: There is a bunch of stuff going on in Night #2 as the story becomes more involved and complex! FBI Sabrina Voght and Agent Andrew Whildon of the FBI are hunting down David Skinner who has been cursed with lycanthropy (werewolf disease). There is a very intense confrontation between Sabrina and the werewolf. Sabrina has her gun drawn and it looks like the werewolf is ready to pounce her, but instead he leaps over her head into freedom. Then the very same werewolf terrorizes a guy on the street named J.T. J.T. is so scared he soils his pants. J.T. is having a bad day, because after being terrorized by the werewolf, he meets up with a very bad gangbanger named Krison. Krison is in the Phreaks gang and J.T. rubs him the wrong way and he literally picks up J.T. by the throat and snaps his neck. There is a lot of gang retribution in this story. Imagine West Side/East Side story meeting Boyz in the Hood meets Menace to Society meets Colors! There is even one incredible scene in which a gang called the Bandanas is face-to-face with a gang called the Phreaks, then the FBI/Chicago PD get into this chaotic confrontation. Then if that wasn’t enough…a whole horde of werewolves surround the gangbangers and police! This story is headed to a big climatic finish and I can’t wait to see what will happen next! Another very cool thing is that Sabrina and her partner Andrew Whildon are connected to Mulder and Scully of the X-Files. In fact Sabrina confuses Agent Wolfe with Agent Foxx. Krison after killing J.T. may have his own life in danger, because he has a mission from the big guy, he must wipe out the rival gang known as the Bandanas. There is some good battle moves when the gangs confront each other, the positioning reminded me of Alexander’s Macedonian Army facing off with the Persian Army. Night is a mixture of Underworld meets X-Files meets Blade! You will be sitting on the edge of your seat with Night and you will probably have all the lights on!

Title: Night # 2
Publisher: Jester Press
Writer: Troy Hasbrouck
Artist: Buddy Prince
Price: $ 2.95 US, $ 4.50 Can
Comments: Talk about looking down the barrel of a gun! As you open up this comic thats exactly what you will be doing. Sabrina Voght is a beautiful blonde bombshell with a big gun and tons of attitude. Along with her partner Andrew Whildon these two FBI agents are hunting a werewolf. This creature is one hulking vicious monster.
The FBI agents Sculder and Wolfe of the X, Y Files seem strangely familiar. They are not tough enough to take Sabrina and Andrew's case away from them. They just faced the Werewolf, David Skinner. Sabrina was run over by him. So you know shes not backing down from anyone ever.
The big gang fight is a vicious melee as the Pheaks and Bandanas gangs go head to head. Than we have a dozen FBI agents bust in and if that wasn't enough action bursting through the windows of the church come at least two dozen werewolves. This little church is getting crowded. Gangs, FBI, Werewolves this comic provides thrill a minute action and stunning art. The starring werewolf is a slobbering engine of destruction kept under control.
The ending will leave you wanting more.
