Re: The Astounding Wolf-Man!

I just got the first two issues, had to pay $4 for the "Director's Cut" version of the free issue one.  Not bad, but kind of silly.  If you read the letters page the writer is more intersted in a super-hero book than a horror book, and it shows.

The automatic appearance of Gary's "Yoda/Mentor" in the guise of a vampire seemed a bit lazy.  If this guy doesn't turn into the book's main antagonist I'll be shocked.  Why the vampire who runs around in a suit would take Gary to the superhero tailor also seems forced, and why does a cool looking werewolf character need a costume??  The writer clearly wants the superhero vibe going strong from jump street and doesn't seem concerned whether or not it flows well in the story.
I'm also having a little trouble with the "Wolf Lair" they seem to be building.  The vampire has a trance put on all the workers so when they finish and go directly into constructing the shopping mall on top no one will remember.  Eh, I don't know about all that.  It would take tons of people, both on and off, to construct an underground dwelling like that and the vampire has everyone involved hypnotized??  And what about the paper trail construction like that would leave?  If no other word is mentioned about this then it was pretty silly and darned lazy.
It sounds like I didn't like the books but its not that, there were just so many turns that I didn’t find necessary.  A cool looking werewolf trying to make his "curse" a force for good doesn't need a lot of dressing, it's a good idea.  And what about glossing over the wife's reaction to this, man what a wasted opportunity.  I guess this is a promising notion that's carrying a lot of "superhero" baggage that takes away from it.  It's like the writer wants to put his horror character in a world of costumed clichés.  I hope it gets better, or at least streamlined.

Re: The Astounding Wolf-Man!

don't forget this is the walking dead guy..I'm not sure how you feel about Walking Dead....but I kinda feel like Romero should be suing Kirkman....all the material from WD is right out of Romero's movies...(my apologies if WD is your favorite book..remember we all got opinions..even on the internet)..

So...I'm reserving judgement on Astounding Wolf Man...Kirkman's Invincible isn't bad so he's ALREADY doing a superhero book.....

let's hope he adds more horror to the mix of this one!

Re: The Astounding Wolf-Man!

Never read Walking Dead, it's difficult to make zombies interesting for me.  And quite frankly didn't Romero write the book on zombies?  I figure it would be difficult to do a zombie piece and not rip Romero off, although I think 28 Days Later tried.

Re: The Astounding Wolf-Man!

From Comics Continuum:

Image Comics announced that The Astounding Wolf-Man, by Robert Kirkman and Jason Howard, will go monthly beginning in July.

"Frankly, I just couldn't stay patient," Kirkman said. "Over the past year The Astounding Wolf-Man has become one of my favorite books to write and, even more so, seeing the pages pour in from Jason has made me crave more! With the impending shocker we've got coming in issue 7, we decided to switch the book from once every 60 days to every 30! I certainly think folks will be happy with the results."

In addition, The Astounding Wolf-Man Vol. 1 TP has been retooled to match up with the monthly shift. The 176-page trade paperback, due in stores on July 30, will contain issues #1-7, extended to include the revelations of #7, and will now lead right into #8.

Re: The Astounding Wolf-Man!

So far lovng the series.  The vampire definetely adds unexpected twists when you least expect them.  No doubt the story everyone begs to see happen is Sergent Superior's fate and what his team'll do once they find Wolf-Man again.

Re: The Astounding Wolf-Man!

I've known about the series for some time now but only just recently have I picked up an issue, #5, the one that just came out so I'm kinda out of the loop as far as how this series got started-but I like the idea of a  werewolf superhero who is constantly fighting off his internal murderous nature.
Like the art style as well, simple clean, but with just enough detail to make it look interesting, as far as writing goes, what can I say...Kirkmans the golden child of Image comics!
Like the look of the main character too, will probably do a drawing of him sometime in the near future.
                                                                                                                     peace cool

Try posting it on www.photobucket.com first, then linking to there here.

I got #3 the other day.  Sweet!  I usually don't go for traditional costume comics any more, but this one seems to work.

Re: The Astounding Wolf-Man!

I like the series so far.

Slight spoilage...

I have feeling Captain Superior's return will bring Zackariah's relationship with Wolf-Man into a bend, and I am very fearful for Wolf's own wife and daughter.  The prelude cover for next issue shows the Wolf-Man crying on his knees as they're heading out a door.

They are definetely making his character strong, but I am at times fearful even Wolf-Man will snap under all this pressure, as if having the firsts of Superior's team beating him senseless wasn't pressure enough!!

Yeah, and quite the issue it was. Quite the gore fest. It'll be interesting to see what happens next! Pity I'm not in the states to pick up the issues, but Comic Kingdom out here should have it... I hope.
