Medieval Werewolf Hunts

You know in the ancient times, there are witch hunts and werewolf hunts, etc. where they burn or kill whoever they thought was a witch/werewolf?

Well, I'd like to know more on the subject of werewolf hunts.

Is it true you can basically claim someone is a werewolf and then he/she will be killed without so much as an investigation?

Re: Medieval Werewolf Hunts

Yeah, thankfully, werewolf hunts don't exist anymore.

However, I'm curious at its history.

Re: Medieval Werewolf Hunts

They don't say much about werewolf hunts...strange...they tend to talk more about witches because thousands of women were killed. Perhaps there were less men killed.

Yeah thank god because alot of us would be in trouble! lol

Re: Medieval Werewolf Hunts

Adam Douglas has a good bit to say about the Werewolf Trial in "The Beast Within". There's also a pretty good recounting of the trial of Jacob Theiss - a better account is given in Carlos Ginzberg's "The Night Battles".

Actually, there usually was an investigation, but people will confess to all sorts of things under torture. Also, there were not many Werewolf Hunts in the early Midle Ages - Werewolves were just not thought badly of then. Werewolves became "bad" around the 15th Century.

Re: Medieval Werewolf Hunts

They had a habit, I believe, of being certain someone was a werewolf (based on rumor or strange features/personal characteristics) until, through torturing them, managed to relieve them of their skin. If there was fur on the inside they were sure the poor soul was a werewolf. I think there were alot of folks saying 'oops' back then.

Re: Medieval Werewolf Hunts

Heh, I only know of one instance of that happening and the guy was bragging that he was a Werewolf, only that his fur grew inward instead of outward and when they cut off a hand (I think it was  a hand), they found that there was no fur in there. But, honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if the same thing happened much more often than that once.

Re: Medieval Werewolf Hunts

What do you expect?
The reason (I think) people are stupid, is becuase they are lazy. They don't want to go find the information themselves, so they either ask someone who doesn't know and take their answer, or they look it up and do not make the effort to learn it. It's really simple....

Re: Medieval Werewolf Hunts

I almost guarantee you that the reason we're not being hunted today is that the Inquisiton is against the law. THings like the Reformation, the Enlightenment (yeah, running around chopping people's heads off is real enlightened.), the Industrial Revolution, and such put a kink in the church's autocracy (Jesus never intended the church to be a political entity, anyway). In order to keep up, they had to develop a more tolerant attitude toward diversity. So in order to be a player at all in the scheme of things, the church can no longer afford to go around torturing people to death.

In breif, the only reason Werelves don't have to worry about people huntin them down and killing them is that it's simply against the law.

Re: Medieval Werewolf Hunts

I dont know if you would call this a werewolf hunt, but what about the legend of Manual Blanco Romasanta?  I mean the queen of spain was about to pardon him from his crimes because he claimed he had lycanthropy.

(Did anyone else watch the movie "werewolf hunter"?)

Re: Medieval Werewolf Hunts

Well, a little wolfsbane will cause a werewolf to hallucinate. A little more will drop him dead as a stone - heart attack - bang! The difference between a therapeutic dose and a lethal dose is very small and like most herbal medicines, strength varies quite a lot between preparations so it's hard to predict just what a therapeutic dose is. In the old days, they would "titrate" a dose - start small and build up until the right effect is obtained. each new batch, you had to retitrate the dose.
