Spirit animal? What's a spirit animal? I know about power animals but not spirit animals.

Re: Ok, ive done some reaserch but...

I think Ab is referring to a "totem", or maybe a spirit guide?

I suppose the standard, "Why do you think you might be a therian?" question is appropriate (since the question "I want to know if I'm a therian" statement usually implies that someone thinks they might be), if it hasn't been asked already.

Well, a spirit guide/totem animal is different to a theriotype.

I know but it's nice to answer a different question occasionally. Hope springs eternal......or something like that.

"Well, a spirit guide/totem animal is different to a theriotype."

Actually, they're different to most people. The only folks I've been able to find that seem to think they're the same are some New Agers and they've never been that much into accuracy, realism, etc.

A spirit guide is an incidental entity - not a major player, who comes along in Dreamtime to sorta help you out and, like a lot of friends may even help you into a worse situation than you were in than before, but.......but, you learn important lessons.

Totem animals are not associated with individuals - they help out social groups. Individuals don't have totems except in that they're members of a group. Totems tend to be somewhat more reliable than spirit guides. They teach you thing such as how to plant corn, how to round up buffalo, and how to program your VCR for telecommittee meetings.

Power animals are big players. They might help out groups, they may help out individuals, but mostly they're in it for the entertainment value. Ask Coyote - humans are hilarious.

Re: Ok, ive done some reaserch but...

Well, by their true definition they're obviously different. To summarize in a very succinct fashion:

1) To have a spirit guide is to be guided by an animal,
2) To be a therian is to know that inside, you ARE an animal.

Sorry, Shady. I read you wrong. I thought you were talking about totems and spirit guides being different (they are), but I see that you were comparing them with a theriotype, which hare also different).

Aye.  An important (but perhaps subtle) distinction between the two is also a difference between external and internal forces at work.  A spirit guide or totem exists outside a person, whereas a therian's theriotype is an internal realization.

One factor that I've noticed over the years that might help is a person's initial reaction when they first discover the concept of "Therianthropy".  Speaking in general terms, when a person's first reaction is, "Gee, how interesting.  I wonder if this could apply to me?" the person is giving it too much thought.  When a person's first reation is "OMG, I'm not the only one!!!!" then the odds are better favored toward their maybe being a therian.

And let's not forget, it is okay to not be a Therian.

Re: Ok, ive done some reaserch but...

No! Absolutely not. Meditation will only convince you of what you want to believe - not what's real. It's good for quieting your mind but it's never going to be a reliable guide to truth. If you want to play games, then meditate. If you want to know what's really out there, then go out there and pay attention.

Re: Ok, ive done some reaserch but...

There really isn't a straight answer to be had here. No-one can tell you what you are, particularly when it's regarding something as subjective as therianism. There is no litmus test.

At least... that's what I heard big_smile

Re: Ok, ive done some reaserch but...

My impression is that most of us didn't "figure it out". It was pretty obvious for us. A few of us were told about the possibility by someone else and that clicked things into place. Actually, I find it hard to believe that anyone would have problems figuring out that they're a Werewolf.

Re: Ok, ive done some reaserch but...

Abbie, its really hard to determine these kind of things, your going to have to realize that no one is going to be able to answer this question without more information. If you would like some more in depth guidance you can hit me up on aim, yahoo, or msn messenger.

They say there's no such place... as Paradise. Even if you search to the ends of the Earth, there's nothing there. No matter how far you walk, it's always the same road. It just goes on and on. But, in spite of that... Why am I so driven to find it? A voice calls to me... It says, "Search for Paradise."
