He's not any kind of wolf though - he's really patterned on a lion. Also, he doesn't change into one, he was born that way.
So I don't know what that leaves you with... an interesting question regardless.

I though the beast was a prince that had a curse on him, and that the rose was his life (like an hourglass).

I Have Read A Couple Of Different Books With Different Versions Of The Story
In The Book BELLE : A RETELLING OF BEAUTY AND THE BEAST He Is Turned To Look Much Like A Very Large Wolf Standing Upright But With Long Hair On His Head And Humanlike Hands As Punishment For Killing A Deer In The Enchanted Part Of The Forest
