My take on werewolf movies

My wife tells me I'm too picky, but I have certain things I look for in a werewolf movie.

1) As I've said before, I'm a firm believer that being a werewolf is a curse. A person who is transformed againest their will every full moon. In no way should a werewolf be able to transform themselves at will or be able to control the beast. This is NOT a werewolf. (in my opinion) This is a lycanthrope, there IS a difference. A lycanthrope is a shapeshifter that can transform themselves at will. A werewolf cannot.

2) If it's a werewolf movie I wanna see the transformation. So far I've only seen two movies and two television series that have done this convincingly.
American Werewolf In London and The Wolfman and the Being Human Series (Both versions)
I cannot stand the terrible CGI transformations\Shifts that most films have attempted.

3) I've seen quite a few "werewolf" movies with a potentially decent story that were just not done well. For example...

Dog Soldiers- I loved the general idea for this film, but the werewolves were not great looking and the transformations were off screen. The story itself was not bad, but I would have done a few things different.

Silver Bullet- Good story, but I had two specific complaints. The werewolf was almost never seen on screen, and the transformation was, again, off screen.

The Howling series- I felt some of the story ideas for the Howling movies had some potential, but were very poorly done. The special effects were gaudy, and the storys themselves were sloppy. I would love to take certain ideas from some of the movies and make one decent movie.

Skinwalkers- Potentially decent story, poorly executed. The werewolves were humans with fangs and claws. I'm not sure what genious thought that would be convincing, but it ruined the movie for me.

Darkwolf- I found Darkwolf to be an interesting concept storywise. The film was obviously low budget so I can't blame them much but the special effects were virtually non existant and the werewolf looked like crap.

A Werewolf In A Womens Prison- I think this film was made purely from a pornographic standpoint, but I thought the story itself was an interesting concept. While I haven't seen the entire film, I have seen enough to address a particular grievence. One thing I cannot stand is when werewolf movies use this particular type of transformation. When the "werewolf" rips off the human flesh and emerges from within. To me that is just laziness or an inability to do a proper transformation.

Which brings me to Van Helsing. For the most part I loved this movie. BUT, I did have two complaints. The first is, again, the transformations of the werewolves. Again ripping off the human flesh and emerging from within. Just disappointing.
And the second complaint was a blaringly idiotic detail that made me stop and shake my head. When the full moon appears the werewolf transforms BUT if the moon goes behind a cloud he's suddenly human again. WHAT? Thats like Saturday morning cartoon stuff.

Anyway, I'm done. Just thought I'd get my personal views out there. So now the question is, what is your view on the subject?

Re: My take on werewolf movies

That is also my personal point of view about werewolves. I've tried to defend it in every forum, but save for this an a few more, internet is overcrowded with furries/yiffers, disney-doers who are always complaining about violence (here are also included the "I believe in the power of the american werewolf natives") and teeneagers whose ideal of a werewolf movie is a guy in a fursuit armed with a gatling and being "cool" in human form. So, as they say in my country, it is pointless to swim against the tide...

Re: My take on werewolf movies

I disagree with you on some points. Lycanthrope is just another word for werewolf, not an entirely different creature, I like the skin peeling transformations (it makes a bit of sense, considering the top layer of skin is just dead cells - but I'm not really picky about that point) and I don't mind voluntary transformations.

But.

Otherwise I agree - I can't stand bunny-cuddling werewolves, or "cool" werewolves. If you're gonna turn into a huge carnivore, there should be some ultraviolence.
