Re: Full Moon Comments...

Cool, so May is going to have a blue moon.

The January moon is one of my favorites because it is so high.  Tonight is perfectly clear where I am so I'm pretty happy right now.  The only thing that is missing is snow on the ground sad  Nothing is as beautiful as a winter moon lighting up a snow-covered landscape.

Re: Full Moon Comments...

I seen a red moon once around midnight.  It was really something to see!
The reason it was so red was because of the earths shadow passing over the full moon, I think.  I guess that might be called a lunar eclipes if I'm right.
That was nice.

The blue moon will be on June 30th, 2007.

What exactly causes the moon to be blue, red, or yellow?

A red, orange or yellow looking moon is because of dustlike particles in the atmosphere.  When the moon is on the horizon it looks more red, orange or yellow than when it is higher up because you are viewing it through more dust particles.

Here's a link on it too:

Re: Full Moon Comments...

A blue moon is the rarer second full moon in a one month period. smile A yellow or gold moon is usually what you see as the moon rises through the thicker (and usually polluted) atmosphere near the horizon. Our atmosphere tends to scatter and deflect blue light and let the longer wavelengths of red light pass through, so that's what we end up seeing. It's the same reason you see a reddish moon during a lunar eclipse.

Re: Full Moon Comments...

I found out a couple of cool moon facts on the internet.  I noticed BlackWolf mentioned that various full moons look bigger or smaller.  I found a website that said that a lot of the variation could be explained by how far the moon is away from the earth.  Here is a side-by-side picture of a close moon and a far moon on the site:

http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/3320/sidebyside2zq7.jpg

The difference really surprised me, since I hadn't really ever noticed it.  I saw on another site that the full moon will keep getting farter away from the earth until May, so we are in a shrinking moon cycle now sad

Another thing that is cool is that we always hear about the midnight sun way up north or way down south.  But apparently in the winter-time in the polar regions there is a noon-time full moon also.  So the full moon doesn't set around the poles in winter!

I made this image from an astronomy program I have.  It shows what you would see at noon today if you were on the island of Svalbard looking north:

http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/8162/noonmoonah3.jpg

That would be a cool idea for a werewolf movie.  Up north the werewolves stay shifted for three days straight because the moon doesn't set smile

Of course, the down-side is that in the summer around the poles the full moon doesn't rise at all sad

that reminds me of the comic (and movie in the near future) 30 Days of Night. it's bout vampires living (sort of, knamean?) in Alaska where it's nighttime for a long time (like 30 days, knamean?) and yeah, it's an awesome graphic novel. man, i loves me my comix.

anyways, aroooo! i saw the moon tonight! not the fullest moon, but still, it's pretty full! awoooooo!
