Re: The "new" Wolf Man movie

Valentine's Day is a great time for horror films. So's Christmas. It's counter-programming against all the holiday pap that comes out.

Re: The "new" Wolf Man movie

Yeah I see nothing wrong with it coming out on Valentine's Day. If I recall right, "Cursed" came out around that time.

Here's hoping "The Wolf Man" does a whole lot better at the box office than "Cursed" did. tongue

Re: The "new" Wolf Man movie

I think it will be a great movie if they keep the original in mind and remain respectful to it & not pull the regular hollwood crap & piss on it (which it always seems to do )

Re: The "new" Wolf Man movie

Well obviously I hope they do a good job, but you have to take in account that over half a century has passed since the original and the world is a different place now. I think it is harder than people realise to try and keep the essence of a classic film, so long after it has come out.

As long as they keep key themes intact, I really don't mind it being different.

It's sometimes nice seeing old things with new licks of paint, but it's also nice to see someone trying something a little different with the source material.

Re: The "new" Wolf Man movie

Oh, sorry I mis-read the entry.  Well on the plus side I won't have to go to the theater for a while longer.  (I don't really dig going to the movies.  I prefer watching them at home or a friends house)

Just in time for Feb. '09..............I tried to crop the pic out on the web right now of Benicio giving the 1941 Original Wolf Man choke hold to Stan Winston, but unfortunately I don't think it will show up next to my username too well................

This sounds like it will be quite interesting.  I have to admit though, I've never seen the original.  I'm going to have to go see it now.

Wow, yes I did, ArcLight, thanks.......................Benicio is choking Rick Baker.  You figure I'd remember that after all of the werewolf movie effects he's contributed.

Whoops.

No problem.  smile

Would love to see Stan Winston let loose on a good werewolf movie (meaning, not "Skinwalkers").

Re: The "new" Wolf Man movie

Agreed.  What we need is a little more American Werewolf in London/The Howling, and a little less Skinwalkers.  Hopefully, CGI will be kept to a minimum also (it was getting a little out of hand in Cursed).  Although looking at the way Benicio (yep, were on first name basis now) grew his hair out for the role, I'm looking forward to see what they come up with.............

Re: The "new" Wolf Man movie

Latest news on the movie. Let's hope this isn't a bad sign....

"Director Mark Romanek has dropped out of Universal Pictures The Wolfman, reports Variety.

The trade says Romanek exited the film late Monday night over creative differences. The film has long had Benicio Del Toro aboard to play the werewolf, and the studio just set Emily Blunt (Charlie Wilson's War) and Anthony Hopkins to play the other leads in the film.

Universal maintains that Romanek left the project in strong shape and that it expects to set another director quickly. No word on whether a Feb. 18 start date will remain in place.

The studio is targeting a February 13, 2009 release date for the horror flick."

Re: The "new" Wolf Man movie

What type are they usin? The older vision on werewolves or the new one? The older one being a dude with lots of hair and a slight overbite and the newer one looking like a wolf on two legs.

Re: The "new" Wolf Man movie

Ganked from BoxOfficeProphets:

"February 1, 2008
Universal narrows search for new director

Universal released a shortlist of possible directors to helm the horror film The Wolfman, which is slated to begin production in a few weeks. Directors that have either met with the studio or will do so this week include Brett Ratner (X-Men: The Last Stand), Frank Darabont (The Mist), James Mangold (3:10 to Yuma) and Joe Johnston (Jurassic Park III). Because of budgeting problems, the film's original director Mark Romanek (One Hour Photo) pulled out of the production.
Source: The Hollywood Reporter"

Of those, I'm not familiar with Mangold. I'd probably pick Johnston ("The Rocketeer" is still one of my all-time favorite films and shows he can do a period piece) or Darabont.

Basically anyone on the list other than Ratner.

I'm with you on that, though I'd rather have Mangold then Johnston.
Darabont would be best choice, he certainly could handle a serious horror movie without feeling compelled to do fancy FX work.

I don't envy Hopkins the role of the father, it's gonna be hard to compete with Claude Rains.

Rick Baker is a good choice, he proved that he has the Universal look pat down in 'Wolf'

I prefer to think of him as "The Rocketeer" Joe Johnston.
