Re: Why full moon?

I have another idea:
One of the first werewolf stories is from Petronius, who report from a shapeshifting in the night. He says that on that night it was full moon, so he could see the transformation ! The bright moon was just a hint, that he could see at night. I think that mentioning the full moon was just because of the creditabillity. Later it becomes a fix element...

In brief, we are all monsters, that is a composition of man and beast.

Re: Why full moon?

The real answer to that has little to do with werewolfs. The reason the full moon legend started was becuase in the early ninteenth century doctors in European asylums decovered that there patiants were usually angry and very easily set off during the full moon becuase the equalibrium was unbalanced.

I am pretty sure the works of Petronius pre-dated the nineteenth century. Likewise, I would like to see a source from where that theory originated from regardless.

Re: Why full moon?

In the Pagan belief, their magik is drawn from the moon so maybe their is a dark power behind the mutation. A member of my family (I think he was my mums uncle) turned vicious on every full moon so I believe is isn't just an old wives tale.

Re: Why full moon?

You have to pay close attention to the legends though, old werewolf stories rarely mention the moon, just dark nights, the reason it was mixed with the full moon is Bram Stoker's Wolfman to be precise.

Re: Why full moon?

"Real" lycanthropes can change form at will. The full moon has no affect on their shifting abilities but does have some positive change in the form of physical and mental energy....or so I've been told...and I love staring at it. big_smile

Re: Why full moon?

It may also do with what the moon is made of, sunlight reflecting off the moon may have different wavelengths and so may have different effects compared to regular light.

Re: Why full moon?

In wicca, the full moon has the most energy in a month. While Spike is correct that a lycanthrope could shift at will, the moon's energy would help to bring about a change more.
