The Ballad Of Dewey Robicheaux

The Ballad of Dewey Robicheaux

I remember well
the Louisiana night
I went night fishin
by de full moon bright

De bull frogs dey sing
de birds dey cry out
night is fine in de bayou
of dat have no doubt

But den the clouds parted
and the full moon was red
My pappa done tole me
dat means somebody be dead

The sounds of the bayou
went all quiet and still
dat meant der was sumptin'
stalkin their kill

I hear me a russlin close
by on de shore
I pole roun my batu
I shake to de core

Two big yellow eyes
dey fill me with fright
the las thought I has
was I'm supper tonight

He stepped out to see me
and he want to be seen
he a big shaggy wolfman
all hongry and mean

I jump in the water
to get way from him
I was hopin dat werewolves
didn't know how to swim

But as luck would have it
he swam like a fish
Oh Dewey, I thought,
betta make your las wish

De res be a blur
of de claw and de fang
I was losin myself
when gunshots dey rang

My daddy saw red moon
and knew I was out
He came wit his friends
and he hear my shout

Dey carried me home
I was tore up real bad
at home mamma cry and
hold on to my dad

It only took me
two days to heal
daddy know what dat meant
mah fate she was seal'd

I love you my son
but you now Loup Garou
You must go from here
fore the next fullin moon

I hug my sweet mamma
I shake daddy's hand
he gift me a pirogue
Say go fas as you can

So now I roam free
in the bayous I know
got no more fears
of de night I can show

and dat was a night
in ol '69
men walked on the moon
an Dewey Robicheaux died

But have not a care
for this lonely young wolf
I works on de rigs
down here in de gulf

And when dat moon rise
all full and fat
I jump in my batu
and hunt de muskrat

Der ain't no mean bones
in dis cajun frame
I gentle and friendly
I certified tame

So in the night
you see a wolf in tie-dye
It just little Dewey
an I'm jus passin' by

oh, wow! What a unique poem. I dunno how to express how interesting this was to read. I looooved it!
This is amongst my favourite poems thus far!
You did a great job with the accent and I loved the ending. It made me smile.
I can't stress how great you did with this poem.
Please, please, post more of them soon!

Re: The Ballad Of Dewey Robicheaux

My Wife thinks I should be writing this into a whole book.  So I've started outlining it to see if I can do enough filler to make it worthwhile...
