Part five
They ran across the seemingly endless plain for hours, or days they
couldn't tell. After what might have been three days, they stopped.
Even Selia was out of breath. She mentally said," Well you have gotten
your exercise Silverlen."
He was panting heavily, but managed to say," Well I was a fat happy
hound for the longest time, but I don't think I can manage that
anymore."
She silently laughed and fell flat on her back.
"W...we can't run like this until we reach the town. Why do we run
with haste, other that the reason of not knowing if a beast lurks in
the dark?"
She thought for a minute. "Because we have run out of food, water and
I see no stream here."
Silverlen thought of water and panted more." It's a plain, of course
not. At least not right here. "They both looked around. Selia heard
water.
She bolted off with Silverlen behind her. "Selia, what are you
doing?!" But then he heard water. He came to a stream, hidden by the
flat land. It was clear, and she was drinking the water.
He went up and tried to bite her wing but ended up pulling out five
crimson feathers, in turn getting a mental yelp in his head. "You
don't know if this water is good for drinking!" She pointed a little
ways down the river. The water was green down that way. It's green the
other way too. "You did this?" She nodded. He cautiously stepped up to
the water and started lapping the clear, cold water, after spitting
out the feathers. He finished lapping and looked at her. She was
sitting in the water, surrounded by fish made of the water and some
plants. "You do know they will just fall apart when you get out." She
nodded. Apparently, she didn't feel like mind talking. Then, Silverlen
felt something pushing him. Something wet. He looked back and a blob
of water was pushing him into the water. He was whining and trying to
go back.” I don't like cold things! Selia!” She was smiling
mischievously. As he splashed in the water, he gave a yelp, and
sputtered," Cold! Too cold! Very, very cold!" while she was silently
laughing. To Silverlen, at least most of the time, he got used to her
eerie muted laugh. Most other people would be a little scared. It was
like watching someone behind a window laughing, but not being able to
hear them. He reached the river bank, and stood, shivering, wet, and
whining. Selia looked at him and a frown came on her face.
He heard in his head, "I'm sorry Silverlen...” and then saw a water
droplet moving up in front of his nose. The water was coming out of
his fur, and floating up. When there was a large bubble of water above
him, it moved into the river and busted like a water balloon on Selia.
He heard, "Now I’m wet, silly wolf."
He laughed and said, "That you are little elf, that you are. And your
wings are soaked, too." Selia walked out of the river, and as she did,
the grass and water fish fell apart and the green seeped back into the
spot where she had been. Then she winked at Silverlen. Then, she
raised her arms, and with her arms all the water from her clothes,
hair, wings, and skin went into a stream of water that flowed back
into the river. Silverlen shook, even though he was dry, and looked
into the distance." Selia, we should get moving." No sooner had he
said that then something looking like a hyena mixed with a vulture
walked up. It had a body of a hyena, brown furred, and spotted, with a
beak and wings like a vulture. The feathers were ruffled and dull.
Silverlen started growling at it, and Selia drew her shortsword.
It started a laugh like a hyena but with a little screeching in it.
Then, it spoke in a voice like Silverlen's, only a little higher
pitched." Calm friends, I wish no harm upon an elf and her beast.
Especially not an elf. Whither do you go now?"
Selia thought to Silverlen, and Silverlen said," We search for the
elder dragons, whom can give me an elven form. What can you do for us?
Bring us to them?"
It laughed and said," Nay, I cannot bring you to them, for my wings
can only bring me so far over the land, but I can bring the wolf to
the next town so that the elf can fly, or run, her choice, of course."
Silverlen looked at Selia, then back at the Hyena-vulture. "Fine, "He
said," But don't you dare grip me hard!" He added after glancing at
the creature's talons.
It laughed again, apparently not used to things like this being said
to it, and said," As you wish, beast, I shall grip you loosely." It
flapped twice, and it was off the ground and flew over to Silverlen,
gripping him around the middle with curved, sharp, dull grey talons.
Then, it started flying north-west of their current position. They had
been moving north-east. Selia flew beside the creature, crimson
feathers falling with every flap. They were now high in the air, right
below the clouds. After about half an hour of flying, Selia grew weak
and was steadily falling. The hyena-vulture looked at her. "Hun, you
can get on my back if you wish. You are not an adult yet, so you
cannot possibly hope to fly like one." She thanked it, and landed
softly on its back, and fell asleep. Silverlen was already snoozing in
the claws of the creature. It flew on, and muttered, "Sleep well. When
we get there, I shall tell you."
It looked around as it heard a sleepy, "Thank you, friend." in its mind.
