I don't know of anyone who's managed a real physical transformation. As far a mental "shifting" that's where people report having a different personality or feelings taking over and suppressing or sometimes coexisting with their core personality. I don't "m" or "p" shift. I'm species dysphoric.Which means I'm always looking at the world a bit differently. In my case I've explained it as a transmigration of souls thing. So in my last incarnation I was a wolf, and I retain those memories and the inherent/inherited outlook. Usually its just expressed as very vivid "lucid" dreams of running about as a wolf. If you want some good literary examples of how authors have dealt with the theme, I'd recommend 'Operation Chaos' by Poul Anderson or 'St.Peters Wolf' by...I think...without bothering to google...Michael Cadnum. Very excellent books.
