Re: Other "were" animals (besides werewolves)

That's so true, WVZ! According to what I know, some of it is from travellers or peasants who try to know much about the myths. Most of it is due to war times (like in the battle of Crete), when one soldier either from one side or another hears a tale, then that tale will someday get passed on to other listeners, though they could've loosely translated wrong or change it into something different (probably they had to remember something when they forgot a part and switched it with something new or better).

Re: Other "were" animals (besides werewolves)

Yes indeedy! Another way would be distorted is if any writing on the myths were damaged by natural disasters by war or otherwise, such as a fire in the town or by water, or if the papers have been badly damaged or have turned old in age.

Think of a writer who has all the myths down and he can review it any time he wants to (he even remembers most of them from writing it), but all his stuff is quarterly, half, or all destroyed by a freak fire accident...Not a good sign! By then, the writer has to A) redo any damaged parts again and B) has to remember about every myth about the gods, goddesses, and other mythical creatures in Greece. Honestly, I even bet the writer was a bit frustrated by his memory!

Re: Other "were" animals (besides werewolves)

I read somewhere that in countries that don't have wolves you would find no stories of werewolves, but you may find in those countries that they have stories of other werecreatures that would be indigenous to their area (for example: countries that have tigers may have weretiger stories), interesting, huh?

Re: Other "were" animals (besides werewolves)

True! Man always used what he sees around his home for his stories. Like the early Native Americans used Coyotes, Owls, Jackrabbits, Reptiles, Birds and other desert animals as characters in their stories. Nothing about Lions, Tigers, Elephants and other non-desert animals because having not seen them or heard about them.

Do anyone know or seen a weremoose?

I have always wondered if it's hard to walk around with those heavy antlers on the head?

I know a lady who has enough ungulate in her to have a phantom set of horns and she says that they do cause her problems sometime.

Re: Other "were" animals (besides werewolves)

I looked up "Ungulate" in the Dictionary and it says:

"Having hoofs; of or belonging to a former group of all mammals having hoofs."

So this lady is having a hard time moving around because of the hard material inside of her?

Heh. She doesn't really have a hard time moving around. It just occasionally catches her off guard (or off balance).

Like a weremoose would have if it walked around on its hind legs with heavy antlers on its head? It would be constantly unbalanced, right?

I dunno. If they grew up like that, seems they'd get used to it. Man, just imagine the neck muscles on the guy!

Re: Other "were" animals (besides werewolves)

I'm looking for stuff on Were-Jaguars in Aztec or other South American legends.

As for weremoose, after running a moose-head puppet for 10 minutes (awful video at www.crazedfanboy.com ) I can attest to the weight and his antlers were stuffed!  My arm was so sore after that.  I think growing up as a moose and having the rack grow in over time would make it easier, but being suddenly transformed into a bipedal Moose one would most likely fall onto their head a lot.  In fact I had a halloween costume this year that made me 7-1/2 feet tall with a head weighing quite a bit, when that thing got knocked off balance it took me to the ground.

Thanks for your interesting post, adom.

Was this moose-head puppet made for a show for kids or something else?

I actually bought it to have for when my nieces and nephews visit, but when I needed an episode of the show for pet care around the holidays I thought it would sound less preachy coming from a Moose puppet.  This month I plan on having real Moose as part of the show.  The show is aimed more at kids, cutsie animals, no carnage, but the travel aspect is for adults.  We mostly deal with PLACES and the animals they have their.  In other words, 8 out of 12 episodes of the year, at least, will be suggesting a destination where ANYONE can see animals and usually it a place you can interact with them as well.

It's footage of Moose I got at Yellowstone.  A mother and calf, actually.

Normally, the way I keep animals from going wild and hurting someone is by either keeping my distance or doing everything the animal handler at the particular place I am at says.  I have only been bitten as part of the show once and that was a bird. He didn't even draw blood, but wanted me to know he was ready to go to back to his perch.

I (well my camera) was also playfully swatted by a rather large feline.  She's one of my favorites, though.

Actually, that cat was on a local news show about once a week.  The camera guys for that show have the mics with the furry wind dampners, so she got used to swatting at those.  When she saw my camera she batted it.  It was fine until she got the veiwfinder.  I'm actually allergic to cats, of all sizes, so when I put my up in that veiwfinder cup it started watering like crazy.  Bobcats and house cats set me off the worst, but not enough to keep me away from them.

I've run into Werepegasuses (Werepegusi?). Mythical creatures turn up as Thereotypes every so often. The Draconics and winged wolves seem to be the most common.
